His papacy began on March 2, 1939, and lasted until his death on October 9, 1958. This 19-year period was a highly consequential era in the 20th century. He led the Church through the destruction of the Second World War and the subsequent rebuilding of Europe. His reign also spanned the beginning of the Cold War. During this time, a new international geopolitical order emerged. This order aimed to protect human rights and maintain peace through institutions like the United Nations.

Before becoming Pope, Eugenio Pacelli held many high-ranking roles within the Roman Curia. This is the administrative body that helps the Pope govern the Church. He served as a priest, a bishop, and a cardinal.

He belonged to an upper-class family known as the "Black Nobility." This group had deep historical ties to the papacy. His father, Filippo Pacelli, was the dean of the Roman Rota. His brother, Francesco Pacelli, was a legal advisor to Pope Pius XI. Eugenio studied theology, philosophy, and canon law at several institutions. He earned a doctoral degree in Sacred Theology in 1899.

During the Second World War, Pius XII's leadership became a subject of intense debate. The Vatican maintained a policy of official neutrality during the conflict. Pius XII used diplomacy to provide aid to victims of the Nazi regime. By directing the Church to offer discreet assistance, he helped save thousands of lives. He also maintained links to the German resistance and shared intelligence with the Allies.

However, his actions remain controversial. Some critics argue his public silence regarding the Holocaust was inadequate. Conversely, the Nazis viewed him as an Allied sympathizer who broke neutrality.

As Pope, he issued forty-one encyclicals, which are official letters teaching Church doctrine. One major document was *Mystici Corporis Christi*, regarding the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ. He also wrote *Mediator Dei* concerning liturgy reform. In *Humani generis*, he addressed theologians regarding episcopal teaching. He even noted that the human body might have evolved from earlier forms. In 1950, he used the power of *ex cathedra* papal infallibility. He used this authority to define the dogma of the Assumption of Mary.

Pius XII also made significant changes to Church governance. In 1946, he appointed new international cardinals. This action removed the Italian majority within the College of Cardinals. He also issued a Decree against Communism. This decree stated that Catholics following communist doctrines would be excommunicated. This occurred during a time when the Church faced persecution in the Eastern Bloc. Many Catholic clergy faced mass deportations during this period of political tension.

After his death in 1958, he was succeeded by Pope John XXIII. The process to recognize him as a saint began much later. His cause for canonization was opened in 1965 by Pope Paul VI. In 1990, the opening of his beatification process led to him being titled a "Servant of God." Later, in 2009, Benedict XVI declared him "venerable." His life remains a central study in how religious leadership interacts with global politics and modern history.
