The conclave, a meeting to elect a pope, was divided between conservatives and liberals. Conservatives wanted strict papal authority, while liberals sought moderate reforms. On June 16, 1846, Mastai-Ferretti was elected after a deadlock between other candidates. He chose the name Pius IX to honor Pope Pius VII. Initially, his election caused great enthusiasm. After the Revolutions of 1848, his policies became increasingly conservative. He moved away from his earlier liberal views and toward protecting traditional authority. In 1854, he promulgated the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. This is the belief that Mary, the Mother of God, was conceived without original sin. In 1864, he issued the Syllabus of Errors. This document strongly condemned modernism, secularization, and the separation of church and state.

Pius IX also worked to centralize the power of the Holy See.

He convened the First Vatican Council in 1869 to strengthen this authority. A major result of this council was the definition of papal infallibility. This dogma states that the pope is preserved from error when teaching on faith or morals. This council also saw tensions with other groups, such as the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. Patriarch Gregory II Youssef disagreed with certain aspects of the council. This led to a difficult relationship between the Patriarch and the Pope.

The end of the Papal States marked a major shift in his reign.

As the Kingdom of Italy moved to unify the country, the Papal States were lost. In 1870, French troops were removed due to the Franco-Prussian War. This allowed the Kingdom of Italy to capture Rome on September 20, 1870. Following this event, the council never reconvened. Pius IX refused to leave the Vatican and called himself a "prisoner in the Vatican."

This period marked the end of the pope's temporal rule over large territories.

Pius IX's legacy remains a subject of study for historians and theologians. He strengthened the central power of the Roman Curia over the global Church. He also revived global donations known as Peter's Pence to support the Church. His long reign saw the Church navigate the challenges of the modern world. In 2000, Pope John Paul II beatified him. This is an official recognition by the Church of his holiness. His life reflects the deep tensions between tradition and the changing modern era.
