Pope Benedict XV led the Catholic Church during a very difficult time in history.
He was born Giacomo della Chiesa on November 21, 1854, in Pegli, Italy. His family had a long history of important people. His father was a Marquess and his mother was a Marchioness.
Because he was born early, he had a limp. He spent much of his early school years at home. He eventually earned a doctorate in Law in 1875. Later, he followed his wish to study for the priesthood in Rome.
Before becoming Pope, he served as the Archbishop of Bologna.
This was a large area with 700,000 people. He worked hard to visit every parish in his care. He even rode horses to reach small churches in the mountains. He wanted to save money so he could give more to the poor.
He also changed how students were taught in the seminary. He added more science and classic studies to their lessons. He wanted to make sure the religious life of the Church stayed strong.
In 1914, the leaders of the Church chose him to be the new Pope.
He chose the name Benedict XV to honor Saint Benedict of Nursia. His time as leader was mostly defined by World War I. He called the war "the suicide of civilized Europe." He tried to act as a neutral leader to help find peace.
He sent ideas for peace to the fighting nations in 1916 and 1917. However, both sides rejected his attempts to stop the fighting.
Since he could not stop the war, he focused on helping people.
He worked to help prisoners of war and wounded soldiers. He also helped deliver food to people in Europe who were hungry. Because he helped Catholic missions around the world, people called him the "Pope of Missions." In 1917, he also released the Code of Canon Law.
This was a new set of rules for the Church. He worked on this with Eugenio Pacelli and Pietro Gasparri.
Benedict XV's later years included many different tasks. He worked to improve relations with France and Italy. He also watched with concern as people in Soviet Russia faced famine.
He was very devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Finally, he fell ill with pneumonia in January 1922. He died on January 22, 1922, after seven years as Pope.
He was buried in the grottoes of Saint Peter's Basilica.
Pope Benedict XV served as the head of the Catholic Church from 1914 until 1922.
Born Giacomo della Chiesa on November 21, 1854, in Pegli, Italy, he came from a family with deep ties to the Church. His father was a Marquess and his mother was a Marchioness.
Because he was born prematurely, he lived with a limp. He completed much of his early education at home. He later earned a doctorate in Law on August 2, 1875. Although his father wanted him to pursue a legal career, Giacomo eventually moved to Rome to study theology.
Before his election to the papacy, della Chiesa built a career in the Vatican's diplomatic service. He studied at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome. There, students defended research papers before high-ranking members of the Roman Curia. In 1882, he began working in the diplomatic service under Cardinal Mariano Rampolla.
In 1907, he received his episcopal consecration from Pope Pius X.
Shortly after, he became the Archbishop of Bologna. This diocese was a massive responsibility. It included 700,000 people, 750 priests, and many religious institutes.
As Archbishop, della Chiesa was known for his active and practical leadership. He traveled to every parish in his diocese. He often used horses to reach small churches in the mountains.
He believed that preaching was a primary duty for a bishop. He also focused on financial responsibility. He taught that the Church should save money to give more to the poor.
He reformed the seminary curriculum by adding more science and classic education. He also oversaw the building and restoration of many churches.
In 1914, the College of Cardinals elected della Chiesa as Pope.
He chose the name Benedict XV. He selected this name to honor Saint Benedict of Nursia. His reign began during the outbreak of World War I. He famously described the conflict as "the suicide of civilized Europe." Because of the war, the cardinals chose him specifically for his diplomatic experience.
He immediately declared that the Holy See would remain neutral during the fighting.
Benedict XV attempted to act as a mediator to bring peace to Europe. In 1916 and 1917, he launched diplomatic initiatives to end the war. However, these efforts were rejected by the warring sides. German Protestants found his peace proposals insulting. The French politician Georges Clemenceau viewed the Vatican's actions as anti-French.
Since diplomacy failed to stop the war, he turned his attention to humanitarian work. He focused on helping prisoners of war and exchanging wounded soldiers. He also coordinated food deliveries to populations suffering from hunger in Europe.
Beyond war relief, the Pope worked to strengthen the internal structure of the Church. In 1917, he promulgated the Code of Canon Law.
This was a major collection of laws for the Church. He prepared this code with the help of Eugenio Pacelli and Pietro Gasparri. He also worked to revitalize Catholic missions worldwide. Because of this focus, he is often called the "Pope of Missions."
He also dealt with the famine and persecution occurring in Soviet Russia following the revolution.
In his final years, Benedict XV worked to improve international relations. He helped restore relations with France in 1921. He also improved ties with Italy by allowing Catholic politicians to participate in national politics.
He remained deeply devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He authorized the Feast of Mary, Mediatrix of all Graces.
His long period of service ended when he fell ill with pneumonia in January 1922. He died on January 22, 1922. He was buried in the grottoes of Saint Peter's Basilica.
