A large war called World War I happened during his time. This war was very hard for Europe. Benedict XV wanted peace. He tried to help the nations find a way to stop fighting. When that did not work, he focused on helping people. He helped move food to hungry people. He also helped wounded soldiers. 
He was also called the "Pope of Missions." This is because he helped Catholic missions around the world. In 1917, he made a new set of rules for the Church. These rules are called the Code of Canon Law. He died in 1922. He was buried in Saint Peter's Basilica.

As Archbishop, della Chiesa was known for his active and practical leadership. He traveled to every parish in his diocese. He often used horses to reach small churches in the mountains. 
In 1914, the College of Cardinals elected della Chiesa as Pope. 

Benedict XV attempted to act as a mediator to bring peace to Europe. In 1916 and 1917, he launched diplomatic initiatives to end the war. However, these efforts were rejected by the warring sides. German Protestants found his peace proposals insulting. The French politician Georges Clemenceau viewed the Vatican's actions as anti-French. Since diplomacy failed to stop the war, he turned his attention to humanitarian work. He focused on helping prisoners of war and exchanging wounded soldiers. He also coordinated food deliveries to populations suffering from hunger in Europe.
Beyond war relief, the Pope worked to strengthen the internal structure of the Church. In 1917, he promulgated the Code of Canon Law. 

In his final years, Benedict XV worked to improve international relations. He helped restore relations with France in 1921. He also improved ties with Italy by allowing Catholic politicians to participate in national politics.
