Alexander I was a leader in the early church in Rome.

He was the fifth bishop of Rome. Most experts think he led the church for ten years. This was around the years 108 to 119 AD. Some old books say he added parts to the Mass. The Mass is a special church service. Many experts today think those stories might not be true.

Other stories say Alexander did special things for the church. Some say he used salt and water to clean homes. He may have helped set new ways for the church to work. One legend says he saw a vision of the baby Jesus.

Some people believe Alexander died for his faith. This might have happened under Roman rulers named Trajan or Hadrian. A story says a governor named Hermes joined his faith. This story says 1,500 people joined him too.

In the year 834, his remains were moved to Germany. People in Germany call this place Bavaria. Even though some facts are hard to prove, his name is still known.
