It was built in the first century AD. It was part of a long water way called an aqueduct. This system carried water to the city of Nemausus.

The water went to fountains, baths, and homes.

The bridge has three levels of arches. It is made of heavy limestone blocks. Some blocks weigh up to six tons! The builders cut the stones very carefully. They fit together using only gravity and friction. They did not use mortar, which is a type of stone glue.

To keep water moving, the path had to slope down very slightly. This slope is called a gradient. The engineers made the bridge height just right. This helped the water flow from natural springs to the city.

Over time, minerals from the water clogged the channel. Workers had to scrub the walls to keep it clean. Today, many people visit this grand site to see its beauty.
