Polynesia is a large part of Oceania.
It is made of more than 1,000 islands. These islands sit in the central and southern Pacific Ocean. The islands form a shape called the Polynesian Triangle. This triangle connects Hawaii, New Zealand, and Easter Island. Many other island groups sit inside this shape. These include Samoa, Tonga, and French Polynesia.
Most islands were made by volcanoes.
The people who live there are Polynesians. They share many things. They have similar ways of speaking. They also share many cultural ways and beliefs.

Polynesia is a vast subregion of Oceania located in the central and southern Pacific Ocean.
To define the boundaries of this region, many people use the concept of the Polynesian Triangle.
The islands of Polynesia were formed through different geological processes.
Geological shifts have recently changed the landscape of parts of Polynesia. The Pacific Plate previously moved in a way that caused it to be subducted under the Australian Plate. When these movements changed, it caused parts of the continent, like modern-day New Zealand, to uplift or rise. This movement is linked to the Kermadec-Tonga subduction zone, a convergent plate boundary running north from New Zealand. This zone is responsible for the volcanism that created the Kermadec and Tongan islands. Additionally, a transform fault known as the Alpine Fault traverses the South Island of New Zealand. The oldest rocks in the region are found in New Zealand and date back 510 million years.
Human history in Polynesia is tied to the migration of the Austronesian people.
The Lapita culture played a vital role in this early expansion. Around 1400 BC, the Lapita people appeared in the Bismarck Archipelago. They were known for their unique pottery tradition. As they moved to smaller islands, they adapted their way of life. For example, they moved away from rice production because paddy field agriculture was not suitable for small islands. Instead, they cultivated staples like taro, yams, breadfruit, and sweet potato. Recent DNA studies show that while early settlers had strong Asian affinities, later intermarriage created a mixed Austronesian-Papuan ancestry.
Polynesia remains a significant region of cultural and geographic importance.
