The name Melanesia was first used in 1832. A French navigator named Jules Dumont d'Urville chose the name. He wanted to name the three main parts of the Pacific. He used the names Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. The name Melanesia means "islands of black [people]." This refers to the skin color of the people living there. In the past, people had different ideas about where the region began. Now, most scholars agree that New Guinea is part of Melanesia.

The history of the people here is very old. Some people arrived in the area a long time ago. They moved from Africa along the edge of Asia. They arrived in a land called Sahul over 40,000 years ago. Sahul was a single landmass that included Australia and New Guinea. Later, other people called Austronesians arrived from Taiwan. They settled along the north coast of New Guinea.

Melanesia is a very special place for languages. There are 1,319 different languages in the region. This is the highest number of languages in any small area on Earth. There is about one language for every 716 square kilometers. This is much more crowded with languages than Nigeria. People also use special languages called creoles to talk to each other. One example is Tok Pisin in Papua New Guinea. These many languages show how diverse the culture is. The people use their shared history to build a strong identity.

Most of the region is located in the Southern Hemisphere. Only a few small islands in the northwestern part of Western New Guinea are in the Northern Hemisphere.

The name Melanesia has a specific historical origin. French navigator Jules Dumont d'Urville first used the term in 1832. He created the names Melanesia and Micronesia to complement the existing name, Polynesia. He wanted to categorize the three main ethnic and geographical regions of the Pacific. Etymologically, Melanesia means "islands of black [people]." This name refers to the dark skin of the indigenous inhabitants.

Defining the exact boundaries of Melanesia has been difficult for scholars. In the nineteenth century, the British missionary Robert Henry Codrington wrote about the region. He defined Melanesia as including Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, and Fiji. He excluded New Guinea and Australia from his definition. Today, the scholarly consensus has changed. Most anthropologists now include New Guinea within the boundaries of Melanesia.

The history of the region involves very ancient migrations. According to the Southern Dispersal theory, hominid populations moved from Africa along the edge of Asia. Some of these people reached a landmass called Sahul over 40,000 years ago. Sahul was a single continent that joined Australia and New Guinea because sea levels were lower.

Later, Austronesian migrants arrived from Taiwan between 4000 and 3000 BC. They settled mostly along the north coast of New Guinea. A 2008 genetic study by Temple University suggested that these groups did not mix extensively. The study found that Polynesians and Micronesians have little genetic relationship to Melanesians.

Melanesia is famous for its incredible linguistic diversity. There are approximately 1,319 different languages spoken across the region. This is the densest collection of distinct languages on Earth. For comparison, it is almost three times as dense as the language density in Nigeria. On average, there is one language for every 716 square kilometers. Many people also use creole languages, which develop from trade and cultural mixing. Examples include Tok Pisin and Hiri Motu in Papua New Guinea, as well as Bislama and Solomon Islands Pijin.

Today, the term Melanesia serves as a powerful source of identity. While some scholars find the term problematic due to its colonial history, many local people use it for empowerment. It provides a basis for a shared subregional identity. This identity even influences modern politics. For example, the Melanesian Spearhead Group is a regional trade agreement. It includes the countries of Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji.
