Micronesia is a place with many islands.

Micronesia is a place in the big ocean.
Some islands are in groups. These groups have special names.
The weather is warm and tropical.
Many islands are made of coral. These are called atolls. They grow around old volcanoes.
People have lived there for a long time. They sailed to the islands in boats.
Micronesia is a large part of the Pacific Ocean.

Many islands are coral atolls. An atoll is a ring of coral around a sunken volcano. The Marshall Islands have 1,156 islands. They form two chains. One chain is the Ratak Chain. The other is the Ralik Chain. The Mariana Islands are different. They are made from volcanic mountains.
Different nations rule these islands. The Republic of Palau is one. The Federated States of Micronesia is another. The Republic of Kiribati includes the Gilbert Islands. Nauru is its own small nation. The United States also has islands there, like Guam.
People first arrived many thousands of years ago. They were Austronesian voyagers. They used clever boats to sail the sea. They made boats with outriggers to stay steady. This helped them find the islands.
Micronesia is a huge part of the Pacific Ocean.
Most islands in this region are coral atolls. An atoll is a ring of coral that grows around a volcano. When the volcano sinks under the sea, the coral keeps growing upward. This keeps the reef near the surface of the water. Most islands are very low to the sea. The Marshall Islands are made of 29 atolls and five islands. They form two groups called the Ratak and Ralik chains.
People have lived here for thousands of years. Long ago, Austronesian voyagers traveled across the sea. They were the first to invent great sailing tools. They used outrigger boats and crab claw sails to travel.
Many different nations rule these many islands. The Republic of Palau is one sovereign nation. The Federated States of Micronesia is another. The Gilbert Islands are part of the Republic of Kiribati.

Micronesia is a very diverse place to visit. Each island group has its own look and feel. The Marshall Islands rely on fishing and farming. Nauru is a very small island with a coral reef. This reef makes it hard to build a large seaport.

Micronesia is a vast subregion of Oceania located in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean.
Most islands in Micronesia are coral atolls. An atoll is a ring-shaped reef that grows around a central volcano. This process begins with coral reefs growing on volcanic slopes. When the volcano eventually sinks below the sea, the coral continues to grow upward. This growth keeps the reef at or near the water level. One exception is Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. Pohnpei still retains its central volcano and surrounding coral reefs. Other islands, like Yap, have a different geological history. These islands consist of uplifted volcanic and metamorphic rocks. This happened due to tectonic movement involving the Yap Trench.
The region is organized into several distinct island groups. The Caroline Islands are a large archipelago of about 500 coral islands. They are located north of New Guinea and east of the Philippines. This group includes the Republic of Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia. The Federated States of Micronesia contains about 600 islands on the eastern side. The Gilbert Islands form a chain of sixteen atolls and coral islands. These islands are arranged in a north-to-south line. The equator divides the northern and southern Gilbert Islands. These islands are part of the Republic of Kiribati.
The Mariana Islands form an arc-shaped archipelago. This chain is made of the summits of fifteen volcanic mountains.
Human settlement in Micronesia began several millennia ago. The Austronesian peoples began a massive seaborne migration. This movement started from pre-Han Formosa between 3000 and 1500 BCE.
Political control of these islands is divided among many nations. The Republic of Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia are sovereign. The Republic of Kiribati includes the Gilbert Islands. The Republic of the Marshall Islands is also a sovereign nation. Nauru is an oval-shaped island and is the world's smallest republic. It covers only 21 square kilometers. The Mariana Islands are affiliated with the United States. This includes the U.S. Territory of Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Wake Island is a coral atoll managed by the United States Air Force. Its sovereignty is currently contested by the United States and the Marshall Islands.
Micronesia is home to unique biological diversity. The Yap Islands host several endemic bird species. These include the Yap monarch and the Olive white-eye. The endangered Yap flying-fox also lives only on Yap. The ocean environment is rich with marine life. You might see spinner dolphins in the surrounding waters.
