Polykarp Kusch was a famous scientist. He studied physics, which is the study of how the world works. He was born in Germany in 1911. His family moved to the United States in 1912. Kusch went to many schools to learn. He earned a degree from Case Institute of Technology. Later, he earned a master's degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

Kusch worked as a teacher at Columbia University. He also worked at the University of Texas at Dallas. He made a big discovery about the electron. An electron is a tiny part of an atom. He found that its magnetic moment was larger than expected. This means the electron has a certain kind of pull. His work helped change how we think about physics.

For this work, Kusch won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1955. He shared this prize with Willis Eugene Lamb. Kusch also helped many students. One of his students helped invent the laser. Today, a dorm at Case Western Reserve University is named after him.
