Nigeria is a large country with a complex way of governing its people. The nation uses a system called a federal and presidential republic. This means the government is divided into different levels and branches. The main rules for how everything works are found in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This document is very important because it separates powers into three parts. These parts are the executive, the legislative, and the judicial branches. This separation helps to keep a balance in the government.

The executive branch is led by the president of the nation. The president acts as both the head of state and the head of government. This person also serves as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. To help run the country, the president leads a group called the Federal Executive Council. There are 24 Federal Ministries that handle different government services. The president must include at least one person from each of the 36 states in the cabinet. Currently, Bola Tinubu is the president and Kashim Shettima is the vice president.

The legislative branch is responsible for making the laws of the land. This branch is known as the National Assembly, or NASS. It is made of two different groups called chambers. The first is the Senate, which has 109 members. The second is the House of Representatives, which has 360 members. These members are elected to represent the interests of the people. They work together to pass bills that can eventually become national laws.

Nigeria has a long history that shaped its current legal system. The country was once under British colonial rule. Because of this, Nigeria uses many laws from England called common law. Nigeria gained its independence on October 1, 1960. Since then, the nation has moved through different eras, including a military era from 1966 to 1999. Today, the legal system also includes customary law from local traditions. Some parts of the country also use Sharia law, which is a religious law based on the Muslim faith.

Understanding Nigeria's politics helps us see how many different ideas can work together. The country uses a representative democracy where citizens elect their leaders. This system allows different ethnic groups and religions to have a voice. Even though the country has faced hard times, the constitution provides a framework for order. The different branches of government are meant to check each other. This helps ensure that the government remains responsible to the people it serves.
