Daylight changes a lot too. In the summer, the sun stays up for 24 hours. In the winter, it is dark all day. In the ocean, tiny animals called krill live. These krill feed many animals. Penguins and blue whales eat them.

These regions stay cold because of how the Sun works. The Sun's energy hits these high latitudes at an angle. This means the light spreads out over a large area. The light is not as strong or concentrated there. It also travels a longer distance through the air. The air can absorb or scatter the light. The ice and snow also reflect the light away. This makes the polar regions stay frigid all year.

Humans live in the north but not in the south. Many countries have claims to the Arctic. These include the United States, Canada, and Russia. Other countries are Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Iceland. Small groups of people live there with unique cultures.

In the south, no people live in Antarctica permanently. Instead, scientists visit to study the ice. They stay at special research stations. The largest one is McMurdo Station, run by the United States. Other stations include Vostok Station in Russia and Scott Base in New Zealand.

Nature works in a special way in the southern ocean. Along the coast, water moves up from deep down. This is called upwelling. It brings up nutrients that feed tiny animals called krill. These krill are a type of marine crustacea. Many big animals rely on this food. Penguins and huge blue whales eat the krill.

Life in the poles is very different from life near the equator. The poles are far from the tropics. The Earth has an axial tilt of 23.5 degrees. This tilt affects how much sunlight the poles get. Daylight hours change a lot during the year. In the summer, there can be 24 hours of light. In the middle of winter, it can be dark all day.

The polar regions are the areas surrounding Earth's geographical poles. These zones are also called the frigid zones or polar zones. They are located within the polar circles at the highest latitudes of our planet.

These regions are distinct from the tropics near the equator. They are also different from the middle latitude regions. The polar regions are defined by their extreme environments and ice. The north and south poles create two very different types of landscapes.

In the north, the Arctic is dominated by floating sea ice. This ice covers much of the Arctic Ocean. There are several ways to define the Arctic region. Some define it as the area north of the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle is currently at 66°33'44" N. Others define it as the region north of 60° north latitude. Another definition is the area from the North Pole south to the timberline.

The southern polar region is the Antarctic. It is usually defined as the area south of 60° south latitude. This region includes the continent of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

The climate in these zones is shaped by solar radiation. The Sun's energy arrives at an oblique angle at high latitudes. This means the light hits the Earth at a slant. Because of this angle, the energy spreads over a larger area. The sunlight is less concentrated than it is at the equator. The energy also travels a longer distance through the atmosphere. During this travel, the atmosphere may absorb, scatter, or reflect the light.

The large amount of ice and snow also reflects sunlight. This reflection further weakens the sunlight that reaches the surface. These factors keep the polar regions generally frigid all year.

Earth's axial tilt is a major factor in polar climate. The planet has an axial tilt of 23.5°. This tilt determines how much solar radiation the poles receive. Because the poles are the farthest from the equator, they receive the weakest radiation. Even in summer, the tilt is not enough to create a high midday declination. This declination is the highest point the Sun reaches in the sky. Therefore, the Sun's rays cannot sufficiently compensate for the high latitude. This results in short and still cold summers.

The polar regions also see extreme variations in daylight. They can experience twenty-four hours of daylight in summer. Conversely, they face complete darkness at mid-winter.

Human presence varies greatly between the two poles. The Arctic circumpolar region has many settlements. Several countries have claims to these Arctic regions. These include the United States, Canada, and Russia. Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Iceland also have claims. Small circumpolar populations often share more in common with each other than with others in their own countries. These populations have diverse cultures and human settlements.

In contrast, Antarctica has no permanent human habitation. Humans only visit for scientific research.

Scientists use various research stations to study the Antarctic. McMurdo Station is the largest station and is run by the United States. Other notable stations include Palmer Station and Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station. Argentina operates the Esperanza Base and Marambio Base. New Zealand runs Scott Base. Russia operates the Vostok Station.

While humans do not live there permanently, a complex ecosystem exists. This is especially true along the coastal zones of Antarctica.

The Southern Ocean ecosystem relies on a process called coastal upwelling. Upwelling occurs when water moves up from the depths. This process provides abundant nutrients to the surface. These nutrients feed krill, which are a type of marine crustacea. The krill then support a complex web of living creatures. This food web includes animals ranging from penguins to blue whales.
