Rivers often bend and curve.

Point bar and cut bank

On the inside of a bend, sand and stones pile up. This pile is called a point bar.

Water flows in a special way around a curve. It rolls sand and small rocks across the river floor. The water pushes these things up the shallow slope.

These sandy spots have very shallow water. They are shaped like a crescent moon.
