This spider is the only blue one in its group. It has bright blue hair and pretty patterns on its body. These patterns look like shapes that repeat themselves. This spider is important because it is very rare. It is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. This means it faces a big risk of disappearing forever.

This spider has a very interesting way of being blue. Its color comes from tiny structures on its hairs. These are called nanostructures. They are so small you cannot see them easily. Because of these structures, the color can change when you look from different angles. This is called iridescence.

Young spiders do not show as much blue color. They become more blue as they grow up. Adult males are usually less blue than females. Males also have longer legs and thinner bodies.

People first learned about this spider a long time ago. In 1898, a man named H.C. West found a female specimen. He was a chief engineer for the Madras Railway. He found the spider near the town of Gooty in India. He sent the spider to the British Museum.

A scientist named Reginald Innes Pocock studied it in 1899. He saw the unique blue color. He decided it was a new species. He gave it the name Poecilotheria metallica.

In the wild, these spiders live in southern India. They live in the deciduous forests of Andhra Pradesh.

They like to live in holes in tall trees. They are arboreal, which means they live in trees. There, they build funnel-shaped webs to catch flying insects. They might eat moths, grasshoppers, or cockroaches. They are very skittish and like to run away. They also try to hide when bright light shines on them.

These spiders are also kept as pets by many people. They have been bred in homes for over ten years.

Females live a long time, sometimes up to 15 years. Males live much shorter lives of only 3 to 4 years. Even though they are pretty, their bite can be serious. Their venom can cause pain, sweating, or headaches. Most bites are "dry bites" where no venom is used. However, their fangs can grow nearly 3/4 of an inch long.
