During this time, the Earth began to change. The world became cooler and drier. This was a middle step between warm times and cold times. In some parts of the world, the air got even warmer first. This was called the Mid-Piacenzian Warm Period. During this warm time, the air was 2 to 3 degrees warmer than it is today.

In the oceans, the water was different. The sea level was about 25 meters higher than today. In the north, ice began to grow on Greenland. This happened around 3 million years ago.
