People love this film because it uses clever visual jokes. It also uses very creative sound effects to make people laugh. Many people now think it is one of the greatest films ever made.

To make this movie, Tati did something very bold. He built a huge, special set called "Tativille." This set was located on a wasteland at Saint-Maurice near Paris. It was not just a small room for acting. It included roads, streetlights, and even an airport!

Tati wanted to have total control over every single detail. He built these things to show how a modern city looks. He wanted to show the feeling of losing old Paris. This massive project helped create a world that felt very real.

Making the film was a very hard job for the crew. The construction of the set began in September 1964. It took a long time to finish everything. Shooting the movie lasted for many months. The budget was very large, reaching up to 17 million francs.

Storms even damaged the set, which cost 1.4 million francs to fix. Tati had to use his own money and take out loans. He even signed away rights to his older films to pay the bills. It was a huge struggle to finish his vision.

Tati used special tools to show his art. He used 70 mm film, which is a very large type of film. This allowed the audience to see tiny details in a big picture. He also used a special sound system called stereophonic sound. Most of the talking in the film is very quiet. Tati turned the volume down on the voices on purpose. He wanted people to watch the funny movements instead. This helped the audience focus on the visual comedy.

The look of the movie is very specific. Most of the colors are grey, blue, and black. Tati wanted it to look almost like a black and white film. He used bright colors only for special moments. For example, a character wears a bright green dress in a dark restaurant. This makes her stand out from everything else. You might notice a small red item in almost every shot. This is a clever way to use color in a grey world.
