Platypus

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The platypus is a very special animal from Australia.

It is a semiaquatic mammal that lives in water and on land. Most mammals give birth to live babies. However, the platypus is a monotreme. This means it lays eggs instead. It is the only living member of its own family. It is also a famous symbol of the land of Australia.

This animal has a very unusual way of finding food. When a platypus swims underwater, it closes its eyes, ears, and nostrils. It uses a sense called electrolocation to see in the dark. The bill of the platypus has 40,000 tiny receptors. These receptors detect small electric currents. These currents come from the muscles of prey moving in the water. The platypus moves its head side-to-side to find the signal. This helps it find food even when it cannot see.

Scientists were very surprised when they first saw a platypus. In 1798, Captain John Hunter sent a sketch and a pelt to Great Britain. In 1799, George Shaw wrote the first description of the animal. Some scientists thought the animal was a fake. They believed someone had sewn a duck's beak onto a different animal. Robert Knox even thought Chinese sailors might have made it. Shaw even used scissors to check for stitches on the skin.

Many facts make the platypus unique. It has thick, brown fur that is very waterproof. This fur is almost as dense as an otter's fur. The animal also has a wide, flat tail like a beaver. This tail stores fat and helps it steer while swimming. Male platypuses have a sharp spur on each hind foot. These spurs can deliver a very painful venom.

In the wild, they are now protected by law. They are considered a near-threatened species by the IUCN.

Learning about the platypus helps us understand how life changes over time. It has features that look like they belong to other animals. For example, it has a bone in its shoulder like a reptile. It also has a single opening called a cloaca. This is a way of using one path for waste and reproduction. Some people call the babies "puggles" or "platypups."
