They help stop bleeding when a blood vessel is hurt. In mammals, platelets are not whole cells. Instead, they are small pieces from much larger cells. These large cells are called megakaryocytes.

These big cells live in your bone marrow. One megakaryocyte can make up to 3,000 platelets. A healthy adult makes billions of them every day!

When you get a cut, platelets work in steps. First, they stick to the area. This is called adhesion. Next, they change shape. This is called activation. They go from a round shape to looking like a fried egg.

Finally, they stick to each other. This is called aggregation. This makes a plug to stop the blood. Platelets also have tiny parts called granules.

These granules hold things that help the wound heal. Most platelets live for about 8 or 9 days. Then, the spleen and liver remove them.
