Plane wave

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A plane wave is a special kind of wave. It describes how a field or a value moves through space. In a plane wave, the value stays the same on any flat plane. This flat plane must be perpendicular to the direction of the wave. You can think of these flat planes as wavefronts. They move forward at a steady speed called velocity.

How does this wave work? The wave moves in a single direction called propagation. As it travels, the wavefronts move along this path. Every point on a single wavefront has the exact same value. This value can be a single number or a vector. A vector is a value that has both size and direction. If the vectors move in the same direction as the wave, it is a longitudinal wave. If they move at a right angle, it is a transverse wave.

Scientists use different names for specific types of these waves. A sinusoidal plane wave is a very specific version. This wave has a profile that follows a smooth, repeating curve. This curve has an amplitude, which is the value of the wave. It also has a spatial frequency and a phase shift. There is also something called a standing wave. A plane standing wave stays in place instead of traveling. It is made by combining two different functions of position and time.

It is important to know that a true plane wave cannot exist. This is because a real plane wave would have to fill all of space. However, we use the plane wave model all the time in physics. It is a very useful tool for many calculations. For example, we use it to study light from stars. When a star is very far away, its light looks like a plane wave. This happens when the area we look at is small compared to the distance.

You can learn a lot about these waves by looking at them simply. Scientists often study them as if they were in a one-dimensional medium. This means they ignore the directions that are perpendicular to the wave. They only focus on the direction the wave is moving. This makes the math much easier to handle. Even though they are models, they help us understand the real world. They show us how energy and fields move through the universe.
