It sits in the southwestern part of the state at a unique geographic point. This is where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio River. Because of these waterways, the city became a vital link between the Atlantic coast and the Midwest. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 302,971 people. This makes it the second-most populous city in Pennsylvania, following Philadelphia.

The history of the region began long before European arrival. The area near the Ohio headwaters was inhabited by the Shawnee and several other Native American groups. The Seneca people used the name Diondega or Jaödeogë’ to describe the confluence of the rivers. In the 18th century, a Lenape town called Shannopin's Town existed near what is now Penn Avenue.

European contact began in 1669 when the French explorer Robert de La Salle traveled down the Ohio River. Later, the French and British empires fought for control of this mineral-rich region. The French built Fort Duquesne, but British General John Forbes eventually took the forks in 1758. He began building Fort Pitt and named the settlement Pittsburgh after the British statesman William Pitt.

As the settlement grew, it became a center for many different industries. In the early 1800s, Pittsburgh produced iron, brass, tin, and glass. The city officially became a city in 1816. By the mid-19th century, the area was home to 1,000 factories that consumed 22 million bushels of coal every year.

The city became famous as "the Steel City" due to its massive role in the American steel industry. Andrew Carnegie helped transform production by using the Bessemer process at his steel works. By 1910, Pittsburgh was the eighth-largest city in the United States. At that time, it produced between one-third and one-half of all the nation's steel.

The economy of Pittsburgh has undergone a major transformation over the last century. During the late 20th century, the city experienced deindustrialization. This process involved a decline in steel and other heavy industries. As a result, many blue-collar workers faced massive layoffs. Several large corporations also moved their headquarters out of the city.

However, Pittsburgh successfully divested from the steel industry to find new paths for growth. Since the 1990s, the city has focused its energy on healthcare, education, and technology. This shift has helped the city remain a powerful economic center.

Today, Pittsburgh is a leader in several high-tech and scientific fields. The area serves as a federal agency headquarters for robotics, software engineering, and cyber defense. It is also a hub for energy research and the nuclear navy. The city's economy is supported by ten Fortune 500 companies. It also hosts seven of the largest 300 law firms in the United States.

Beyond industry and science, Pittsburgh is a place of great culture and recreation. It is often called the "City of Bridges" because it contains 446 bridges.
