He began building Fort Pitt and named the settlement Pittsburgh after the British statesman William Pitt.
As the settlement grew, it became a center for many different industries. In the early 1800s, Pittsburgh produced iron, brass, tin, and glass. The city officially became a city in 1816. By the mid-19th century, the area was home to 1,000 factories that consumed 22 million bushels of coal every year. 

The economy of Pittsburgh has undergone a major transformation over the last century. During the late 20th century, the city experienced deindustrialization. This process involved a decline in steel and other heavy industries. As a result, many blue-collar workers faced massive layoffs. Several large corporations also moved their headquarters out of the city. 
Today, Pittsburgh is a leader in several high-tech and scientific fields. The area serves as a federal agency headquarters for robotics, software engineering, and cyber defense. It is also a hub for energy research and the nuclear navy. The city's economy is supported by ten Fortune 500 companies. It also hosts seven of the largest 300 law firms in the United States.
