As an Electric-type Pokémon, Pikachu possesses the ability to generate and discharge large amounts of electricity. It is physically described as a bipedal rodent with yellow fur and long, pointed ears tipped with black. Its most recognizable features include a lightning bolt-shaped tail and red sacs located on its cheeks. These cheek sacs act as storage for its electrical energy.

The design of Pikachu was a collaborative effort driven by specific creative goals. During the development of Pokémon Red and Blue, lead designer Ken Sugimori felt the roster needed more "cute" characters. He requested that female staff members, such as Atsuko Nishida, assist with these designs. Nishida was given three specific guidelines for the Pikachu species. First, it had to be an Electric-type. Second, it had to undergo two stages of evolution. Third, the final evolution in its line had to appear strong.

Nishida used several clever methods to finalize the character's appearance. She originally modeled the species after squirrels because she found their movements comical. She also decided to give Pikachu red cheek sacs to mimic how squirrels store food. However, the creator Satoshi Tajiri ultimately classified the species as a mouse. Nishida added a striped pattern to Pikachu's back to ensure it looked interesting to players. This was because the character's back would frequently face the player during gameplay.

Evolution is a central mechanic in the Pokémon series where creatures transform into stronger forms. Pikachu is part of a specific evolutionary trinity. It can evolve into Raichu by using a special item called a Thunderstone. While developers originally planned for Raichu to evolve into a species called Gorochu, this was removed due to limited cartridge space. Later, the team added Pichu as a pre-evolution to complete the three-stage line. This progression allows players to experience different levels of power and growth.

Pikachu first debuted in the Japanese video games Pokémon Red and Green in 1996. These titles were later released in North America as Pokémon Red and Blue in 1998. The character's fame grew exponentially through the Pokémon anime television series. In the show, Pikachu is the constant companion of the protagonist, Ash Ketchum. This relationship helped Pikachu become a global icon of Japanese pop culture. It was chosen as a mascot because its design met a specific "checklist" of criteria. These included having a warm design, non-threatening colors, and a face capable of expressing emotion.

The name Pikachu was carefully constructed to be appealing to both Japanese and American audiences. Series director Junichi Masuda explained that the name combines two Japanese onomatopoeia. "Pika" represents a sparkling sound, while "chū" is the sound a mouse makes. This linguistic choice helped the character feel universal. During localization, some staff suggested redesigning Pikachu to look more like a muscular tiger to suit Western tastes. However, these suggestions were rejected to preserve the original cute design.

Voice acting has also played a vital role in the character's identity. Ikue Ōtani has provided the voice for Pikachu in most media since its introduction. Unlike many other Pokémon where actors change by country, Ōtani voices the character in all languages. This consistency ensures that Pikachu's name and personality remain universal across the world. In the anime, Pikachu primarily communicates by saying its own name. This choice was made instead of allowing the character to learn human speech.

Today, Pikachu appears in a vast array of media formats. It is featured in major video game series like Pokémon Go and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. In the games Pokémon Sword and Shield, players can encounter a special "Gigantamax" form. This form is a massive version of Pikachu that resembles its original, pudgier design. This connection to the character's history shows how much the franchise values its long-standing icons. Pikachu remains a symbol of togetherness and joy for fans of all ages.
