He is well known for his bold use of color. His paintings often have a decorative feel. He did not always focus on the main subject. Instead, he let colors and patterns take the lead. This style helped bridge the gap between Impressionism and Modernism. He captured many parts of life, like gardens and city scenes.

Bonnard was a founding member of a group called Les Nabis. This was an informal group of artist friends. They all had different styles and ideas. However, they shared the same big goals for art. Some members made very serious or religious paintings. Bonnard was different because he was more cheerful. His work often had a sense of humor and gaiety. He liked to keep things light and decorative.

Japanese art had a huge impact on his work.

He saw many Japanese prints in Paris galleries. He loved the bold geometric patterns in their art. Because of this, he often painted women in checkered blouses. He also used the style of Japanese scrolls. These are long, vertical panels called kakemono. He even made a series of paintings called Women in the garden. This series used four separate decorative panels.

Bonnard had a very busy and interesting life. He was born in Fontenay-aux-Roses on October 3, 1867. He actually studied law first to please his father. He earned a law license between 1886 and 1887. Later, he went to art classes at the Académie Julian. In 1889, he served as a soldier in the infantry. He also sold a poster design for France-Champagne. This helped him prove he could work as an artist.

His art reached many different people through many forms. He did not just paint on canvas. He designed furniture, fabrics, and even fans. He made stained glass windows for Tiffany in 1895. He also made many lithographs and book illustrations. He lived with his wife, Marthe, for many years. She was the model for many of his portraits. He continued to create art until he died in 1947.
