It grows in many places across Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe. You can find it from Norway all the way to Greece. The tree can live for up to 300 years in the wild. Some parts of the tree are even used to make things like paper and wood.

This tree has a very specific way it grows. When it is young, it can grow up to 1 meter every year. This fast growth can last for the first 25 years. The trunk can grow to be 1 to 1.5 meters wide. The leaves are dark green and shaped like needles.

These needles are 12 to 14 mm long and have blunt tips. The tree also grows very long cones. These cones are 9 to 17 cm long. They hang downwards from the branches. The seeds inside are black with a small wing to help them move.

Scientists have done a lot of work to learn about this tree. In 2013, they finished sequencing its genome. A genome is the set of instructions for a living thing. This was the first gymnosperm genome to be fully mapped. A gymnosperm is a type of plant that has seeds. The spruce genome is huge. It is about six times the size of a human genome. It contains about 20 billion base pairs. This makes it a very hard task for computers to study.

There are many interesting facts about where this tree lives. It grows in the mountains and the forests of Europe. In the north, it grows as far as 70° N in Norway. To the east, it lives near the Ural Mountains. It is very close to the Siberian spruce. These two types of trees can hybridize, which means they can breed together. This makes it hard to tell where one type ends and the other begins. In North America, the tree is also found in many states and parts of Canada.

We use the Norway spruce in our lives in many ways. Many cities receive a tree as a special gift every year. For example, Oslo sends a tree to London for Trafalgar Square. This is a way to say thank you for help during the Second World War. People also use the wood to make violins. Some special wood from the Alps was even used by Stradivarius. In Finland, people use the tips of the tree as a spice. They use them in tea, syrup, and even desserts.
