Phonon

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Everything in a solid is made of tiny parts. These parts are atoms or molecules. They sit in a neat, repeating pattern. We call this pattern a lattice.

These atoms do not stay perfectly still. They shake and vibrate. When one atom moves, it pulls on its neighbors. This creates a wave of motion that travels through the whole group.

Scientists call these tiny bits of vibration phonons. A phonon is a quasiparticle. This means it is a way to describe how energy moves in waves. You can think of a phonon as a tiny piece of sound. It is like a photon, which is a tiny piece of light.

Phonons are very important. They help heat move through a solid. They also help electricity move. In some solids, there are two kinds of phonons. There are acoustic phonons and optical phonons. These describe different ways the atoms can shake together. The idea of the phonon was first shared by Igor Tamm in 1930. A man named Yakov Frenkel suggested the name.
