A phonograph is a device that plays sound.

It works by using a record. A record is a spinning disc or a tube. It has a tiny groove on its surface. This groove follows a spiral path.

To play music, a small needle called a stylus traces the groove. As the record spins, the groove makes the stylus vibrate. These vibrations create sound waves for us to hear.

Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877.

His early machines used wax cylinders. Later, Emile Berliner made flat discs. He called his machine a gramophone. These discs became very popular in the 20th century. Many people kept them in their homes.

Today, we use many names for these tools. Some people say record player. Others say turntable. A turntable is often just one part of a larger system. It must connect to a separate amplifier and speakers to work. Even though we have new ways to hear music, many people still love records today.
