Phoebe Palmer was a famous Methodist writer. She lived in New York City. She was born in 1807. Many people call her a founder of the Holiness movement.

Phoebe taught a special idea. This idea was called Christian perfection. It is the belief that a person can live without sin. She felt this was possible in 1837. She wanted to teach others how to feel this way too.

Phoebe led prayer meetings in her own home. At first, only women came to these meetings. Later, men were allowed to join. The meetings grew so large that she had to make her house bigger. Many church leaders came to hear her speak.

Phoebe and her husband, Walter, traveled to share her ideas. They visited Canada and the United Kingdom. She also edited a monthly magazine. She wrote many books, like The Way of Holiness.

Phoebe also helped people in need. She helped start a mission in a poor part of New York City. Her daughter, Phoebe Knapp, wrote music. One famous tune was "Blessed Assurance." Phoebe died in 1874.
