Human history on the islands stretches back hundreds of thousands of years. Evidence shows early hominins lived there 709,000 years ago. The oldest modern human remains are from the Tabon Caves in Palawan.

These remains are about 47,000 years old. These early people were likely Negritos. They migrated from Africa via southern Asia. Later, Austronesian peoples arrived from Taiwan around 2200 BC. They settled in the Batanes Islands and northern Luzon. By 1000 BC, the people had formed four distinct societies. These included hunter-gatherers, warriors, highland plutocracies, and port principalities.

Trade and religion shaped the islands before European arrival. The Laguna Copperplate Inscription from 900 AD is the oldest written record. It was written in Old Malay using the Kawi script. During the Tang and Song dynasties, trade with China expanded. This brought Chinese merchants and migrants to the islands. They eventually settled and intermixed with local people. In the 14th century, Indian cultural traits spread through the Majapahit Empire. This included new religious practices and linguistic terms. By the 15th century, Islam was established in the Sulu Archipelago. Early societies were often organized into small groups called barangays. These were led by nobles known as datus.

Spanish colonization began in the 16th century. The explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521. He claimed the islands for Spain but was killed in the Battle of Mactan. Later, Miguel López de Legazpi arrived in 1565. He began the unification of the islands under the Spanish Crown. In 1543, the islands were named for King Philip II.

Manila became the capital in 1571. It served as a major hub for trans-Pacific trade. The Spanish used a "divide and conquer" strategy to control local states. They consolidated many barangays into towns. This helped Catholic missionaries convert the population. Catholicism became the dominant religion in the lowlands.

Political changes continued through the 19th and 20th centuries. The Philippine Revolution began in 1896. This movement was linked to the Spanish–American War of 1898. Spain ceded the territory to the United States. Filipino revolutionaries had already declared the First Philippine Republic. The subsequent Philippine–American War ended with U.S. control. The Japanese invaded the islands during World War II.

After the United States retook the islands, the Philippines gained independence in 1946. The nation later faced martial law from 1972 to 1981. This was under the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. The People Power Revolution in 1986 overthrew the dictatorship. This event returned the country to democracy.

Today, the Philippines is a diverse and populous nation. It has over 112 million people. This makes it the fourteenth-most-populous country in the world. Manila is the capital. Quezon City is the most populated city. Both are in Metro Manila.
