Silvers achieved massive popularity through television, film, and Broadway theater. He was a versatile performer who could sing, write lyrics, and command a stage.

Silvers began his journey in the entertainment industry at the age of 11. During that era, film projectors often broke down during movie screenings. Silvers would step in to sing for the audience during these technical delays. He became so helpful that theaters allowed him to attend for free. By age 13, he was a professional singer in the Gus Edwards Revue. He later worked in vaudeville and as a burlesque comic to hone his skills. He eventually moved into short films for Vitaphone and onto the Broadway stage.

His career included many distinct stages and types of performance. On Broadway, he moved from small roles to major starring parts. In 1939, he made his debut in the play Yokel Boy. He later starred in the 1952 musical Top Banana, playing an egocentric television star. He also excelled in musical comedies like A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. In Hollywood, he worked as a character actor for major studios like Warner Bros. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

He appeared in films alongside stars such as Humphrey Bogart, Gene Kelly, and Judy Garland.

Silvers's history is marked by significant professional milestones and transitions. He worked as a character actor for two decades during the height of the studio system. When that system began to decline, he successfully returned to the stage. He also contributed to music by writing lyrics for the jazz standard "Nancy (with the Laughing Face)." He wrote these lyrics while visiting composer Jimmy Van Heusen. The song was intended as a birthday gift for songwriter Johnny Burke's wife. After Frank Sinatra recorded it in 1945, it became a massive hit. During World War II, Silvers also toured overseas with Sinatra to entertain troops.

The significance of his work is reflected in many prestigious awards and rankings. He won two Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on The Phil Silvers Show. He also earned two Tony Awards for his Broadway performances. He made history as the first leading actor to win a Tony Award in a musical revival.

In 1996, TV Guide ranked him number 31 on its list of the 50 greatest television stars. In 2005, fellow comedy professionals voted him as one of the top 50 comedy acts ever.

Notable examples of his work show his ability to play specific, memorable characters. His most famous role was Master Sergeant Ernest Bilko in The Phil Silvers Show. This character was an opportunistic, fast-talking man navigating life on a U.S. Army post. He also played the con-man Harrison Floy in the 1947 production of High Button Shoes. In the 1963 film It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, he showcased his film comedy skills. Even in his later years, he played unique roles, such as a producer on Gilligan's Island.

Voice actors even used impressions of his voice for characters like Hokey Wolf. His sense of comedic timing was admired by other legends, including Dick Van Dyke. Beyond entertainment, his life reflected the struggles of many performers, including health challenges and personal difficulties. He died in his sleep on November 1, 1985, in Century City, California.
