She was born Sally Clark on November 15, 1932, in Ewell, England. Her parents, Doris and Leslie Noah Clark, were both nurses. Her father even helped create her stage name, Petula. He made it by combining the names of two old friends, Pet and Ulla. She spent part of her childhood in Wales near a coal mining town.
