The city's name tells a story of its industrial beginnings. It combines the name Peter, for Peter the Great, with the word zavod. In Russian, zavod means factory. This reflects its origins as a site for manufacturing. The settlement was founded on September 11, 1703, by Prince Menshikov. He acted on the orders of Tsar Peter the Great. The Tsar needed an iron foundry for the Great Northern War. This facility produced cannons and anchors for the Baltic Fleet.

Industrial development happened in several distinct stages. Initially, the site was known as Shuysky Zavod. This name referred to its location near the Shuya River. A decade later, it became Petrovsky zavod to honor the monarch. After the initial factory closed in 1734, industry declined for a time. However, Catherine the Great revived the sector in 1773. She established the Alexandrovsky iron foundry upstream on the Lososinka River. This foundry was named after the patron saint Alexander Nevsky. It was designed to supply cannons for the Russo-Turkish Wars.

Petrozavodsk has experienced many name changes throughout history. In 1777, Catherine the Great granted it city status. This reform officially changed the name to Petrozavodsk. During the 1930s, leaders unofficially planned to rename it Gyllinggrad. This would have honored Edvard Gylling, a leader of the Karelian ASSR. However, Gylling was executed during the Great Purge, so the plan failed. During World War II, Finnish forces occupied the area. They used the name Äänislinna between 1941 and 1944. This was a Finnish translation of the old Swedish name, Onegaborg.

The local climate is a humid continental type. It borders on a subarctic climate. Despite its high latitude, temperatures are relatively mild. This is due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. Milder air masses reach the city from the Atlantic and the Baltic Sea. The large nearby lakes also have a moderating effect. These factors prevent temperatures from becoming too extreme. However, the city still experiences long and cold winters. The weather can change rapidly during the cooler months.
