As a member of the renowned Parler family of master builders, he helped define the late Gothic style. His work transformed the skylines of Central Europe through massive cathedrals, bridges, and castles. Parler was not just a builder; he was a master of complex stone carving and structural engineering. His ability to blend artistic beauty with technical skill made him a favorite of the most powerful leaders of his time. His legacy remains visible today in many of Europe's most famous historical monuments.\n\nParler’s career began in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, where he apprenticed under his father, Heinrich Parler the Elder.

They worked together on the Holy Cross Minster, a large parish church. During this period, Peter helped lay the cornerstone of the church's choir in 1351. It was here that he developed his trademark architectural style. One key feature was the use of a continuous balustrade, which is a decorative low railing. This element helped divide different sections of a building while maintaining a sense of flow. He also worked on the arched section of the southern portal at this site.\n\nAfter his apprenticeship, Parler traveled as a wandering journeyman to study advanced Gothic construction techniques. He visited major centers like Cologne and Strasbourg to observe how master masons worked. His time in Strasbourg was particularly important for his technical development. Scholars believe his later designs for complex vaults were modeled after the St. Catherine Chapel in Strasbourg Cathedral. Some experts even suggest he may have traveled to England. This theory exists because his buildings contain concealed technical devices that were common in English Gothic methods. He likely integrated these foreign secrets into his own unique approach to stone masonry.\n\nBy 1352, Parler was working in Nuremberg at the Frauenkirche.

He served as a parlier, which is a role similar to a chief site assistant or foreman. During this time, he worked alongside his father on projects commissioned by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. He created important sculptures there, such as a prominent figure of Zacharias. His sophisticated style eventually caught the attention of the Emperor. In 1356, at the age of 23, Parler was summoned to Prague. This appointment was a massive responsibility, as he was tasked with building the most important structures in the Empire.\n\nIn Prague, Parler's work became central to the city's \"golden era.\"

He took over the construction of St. Vitus Cathedral, which had stalled after the death of the previous architect, Matthias of Arras. Parler modified the original plans while respecting the existing vision. He also designed the Old Town Bridge Tower and worked on the Charles Bridge.

To ensure a lucky start, the first stone of the bridge was laid on July 9, 1357, at 5:31 am. Parler even carved the palindromic number 135797531 into the tower to mark this auspicious moment.\n\nParler's influence extended far beyond his personal projects through the \"Parler style.\" This style spread across Central Europe, reaching as far as the Netherlands, Poland, and Scandinavia. Notable examples of this influence include St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and St. Mary's in Denmark. Even the massive Seville Cathedral in Spain shows
