Grünberg discovered something called giant magnetoresistance, or GMR. This is a special magnetic effect. He found it in 1988. In 1986, he also found how magnetic layers can link together. He saw that thin layers of magnets could interact in new ways. These layers were separated by a very thin non-magnetic layer. This discovery is used in the read heads of hard drives. It also helps make special computer memory that stays on.
