He served as the tenth president of Pakistan from 2001 to 2008. Before his political career, he was a four-star general. He held several top positions, including Chief of Army Staff and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His leadership shaped Pakistan through wars, economic shifts, and intense political conflicts. His life is viewed by many as a mixed legacy of modernization and weakened democratic institutions.

He also studied at the Royal College of Defence Studies in Britain. There, he wrote a thesis about the arms race in the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent. By 1998, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appointed him Chief of Army Staff. Musharraf was the leading architect of the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan.

His transition to political leadership began with a period of great instability. Following the Kargil War, Prime Minister Sharif attempted to dismiss Musharraf from his command. In response, the Army General Headquarters took control of the civilian government.

On the economic front, his administration pursued privatization and economic liberalization. These efforts, led by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, helped increase the gross domestic product (GDP). However, these changes also led to rising economic inequality. The government also faced difficulties containing religious-motivated terrorism and tribal nationalism.

His presidency eventually faced a dramatic downfall due to legal and political challenges. In 2007, Musharraf attempted to remove the Chief Justice of Pakistan from office. He also suspended the writ of the constitution, which is the legal authority of the law.

This led to his resignation in 2008 to avoid being removed through impeachment. In later years, he faced lawsuits regarding the deaths of politicians Akbar Bugti and Benazir Bhutto. A special court in 2019 found him guilty of violating the constitution and sentenced him in absentia. Musharraf died in Dubai in 2023 at age 79 after a long illness.
