The Persian people are an ethnic group native to the Iranian plateau in West Asia. Today, they make up the majority of the population in modern-day Iran. They are united by a common cultural system and the Persian language.

Historically, Western observers often used "Persian" to describe all people from Iran. This changed during the 20th century as the term became more specific to the ethnic group. The term itself comes from Latin and Greek roots. It is a variation of the name for Old Persian, which is the ancestor of the modern language.

The history of the Persians begins with ancient Iranian peoples. These groups migrated to a region called Persis, also known as Persia proper, by the 9th century BC. Persis corresponds to the modern Fars Province in Iran.

Early records show the name was once used to describe a "Land of the horses." Over time, these nomadic groups settled and established themselves in the Zagros Mountains. They eventually grew into a powerful people who would shape the ancient Near East.

One of the most significant periods was the rise of the Achaemenid Empire. Originally, the Persians were a vassal state under the Median monarchy. In 552 BC, the Achaemenid Persians revolted against the Medes. This led to a major victory for Cyrus the Great in 550 BC.

Under the Achaemenids, the empire grew to become the largest the world had seen. It stretched from Eastern Europe in the west to the Indus Valley in the east. They built massive cities like Pasargadae and Persepolis to support their influence.

The Achaemenid era also led to a deep cultural exchange with other civilizations. Persian colonists settled in areas like Asia Minor, creating regions like the Hyrcanian plain.

Even after the empire fell to Alexander the Great in 330 BC, Persian influence remained. In places like Cappadocia, people continued to practice the Iranian faith. They maintained fire temples and rituals similar to the Persian fire ceremonies.

After the fall of the Achaemenids, Iranian identity reemerged through new empires. The Parthian Empire was founded in 247 BC by people from Parthia. Later, the Sasanian dynasty took power in 224 AD.

The Sasanian era was a time of great national pride. They sought to revive the wisdom of ancient sages and celebrate a heroic past. During this time, Middle Persian became the official language. This language is the direct ancestor of the Modern Persian spoken today.

The Sasanians were a global power for many centuries. For over 400 years, they were recognized as one of the two leading powers in the world. They engaged in long, influential wars with the Roman and Byzantine empires. These conflicts shaped the landscape of West Asia, Europe, and North Africa. Eventually, the Arab conquest brought about the Islamization of the region. This changed the political reality, as Arabic became a primary language for many subject peoples.

Despite political changes, Persian culture has had a massive global impact. The prestige of Persian civilization helped develop many "Persianate" societies in Central and South Asia. This influence is visible in art, science, and literature.

Many famous figures, such as the poet Rumi and the scholar Avicenna, came from the broader Persian cultural world. While they were born in places like Afghanistan or Central Asia, they are central to this tradition. Today, the Persian language continues through varieties like Dari in Afghanistan and Tajiki in Tajikistan.
