Perseverance is a special NASA rover exploring the red planet, Mars. 

The rover works by using many clever tools to explore. It has 19 cameras to take pictures and two microphones to hear sounds. One tool, called MOXIE, actually makes oxygen from the thin Martian air. This helps us learn how humans might breathe there one day. Perseverance also has a long robotic arm for touching rocks. This arm has a special system to drill into the ground. It collects rock and soil samples to keep in small tubes. These samples are waiting for a future mission to bring them home.
Building this rover took many years of hard work. In the early 2010s, NASA had to make tough choices about money. A group of scientists suggested a plan to bring Mars samples back to Earth. They said a rover should be the first step in that big goal. NASA announced the Mars 2020 mission in December 2012. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory managed the building of the rover. It launched on July 30, 2020, from Cape Canaveral.
Perseverance is a very heavy and strong machine. It weighs about 1,025 kilograms, which is more than the Curiosity rover. It uses a power source called an MMRTG to stay running. This arm carries a rock-coring mechanism to extract geologic samples. These samples are placed into sterile caching tubes. A secondary, hidden arm called the Sample Handling Assembly (SHA) moves these samples. The SHA places them into the Adaptive Caching Assembly (ACA) located on the rover's underside. Within the ACA, the rover performs volume assessment and imaging. It then uses a hermetic seal station to close the tubes securely. These samples are cached on the surface for a future mission to retrieve and return to Earth.
The rover is equipped with seven primary scientific instruments to conduct its work. 
The history of this mission began during a period of uncertainty for NASA. In the early 2010s, budget cuts forced NASA to cancel a planned collaboration with the European Space Agency. However, the 2011 Planetary Science Decadal Survey changed the mission's direction. This report recommended a Mars Sample Return campaign as a top priority. It suggested that a sample-caching rover should be the first step in this process. In response, NASA announced the Mars 2020 mission in December 2012. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory managed the construction and operation of the rover. It launched on July 30, 2020, aboard an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral.
Perseverance is a heavy and robust machine designed for long-term survival. It weighs approximately 1,025 kilograms, which is 14% heavier than the Curiosity rover. To ensure durability, engineers designed thicker aluminum wheels with titanium spokes. The rover is powered by a multi-mission radioisotope thermoelectric generator (MMRTG). This device uses the radioactive decay of plutonium-238 to create heat. This heat is then converted into electricity, providing about 110 watts at launch. This power source allows the rover to operate at night and during dust storms. The mission is expected to last for over a decade. As of 2025, the rover has been active for 1,734 sols, or 1,782 Earth days.
The mission has already produced significant scientific results. 
Perseverance also acted as a testbed for new flight technologies. It deployed the Ingenuity helicopter to test powered flight on another planet.
