Perjury

society Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Sometimes people must promise to tell the truth. This is called an oath. Perjury is when a person lies on purpose while under oath. To commit perjury, a person must mean to lie. It is not perjury to make an honest mistake. It is also not perjury to have a bad memory. A lie must be about something important to the case. For example, lying about your age might be perjury if it changes the legal result.

Lying in court is a very serious crime. It can make the law fail and hurt people. Because of this, many countries have strict rules. In Canada, a person can go to jail for up to 14 years. In England and Wales, the limit is 7 years. In the United States, it is a felony. This means it is a serious crime. In some parts of the U.S., it can even be a capital offense.

Rules for perjury also apply to tax forms. People must sign them and promise they are true. In some places, trying to make someone else lie is also a crime. This is called subornation of perjury.
