Perjury

society Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Sometimes people must promise to tell the truth. They do this in court. This is called an oath.

Perjury is when a person lies on purpose. They must know the lie is not true. It is not perjury to make a mistake. It is also not perjury to have a bad memory.

Lying in court is a serious crime. It can make the law fail. It can hurt many people.

Many lands have rules for this. In some places, people go to jail. They might pay a fine too.

In the past, rules were different. Long ago, only some people could lie. Now, many people must be honest.
