life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Periodical cicadas are special bugs. They live in eastern North America. Most of their life is spent underground. They live as nymphs, which are young bugs.

These nymphs stay under the dirt for 13 or 17 years. They feed on fluids from tree roots. In the spring, they emerge all at once. They come out in huge numbers.

This mass emergence is a way to stay safe. There are so many bugs that predators cannot eat them all. This is called predator satiation. This means many cicadas will survive to make babies.

Adult cicadas have red eyes and orange wing veins. Males make a very loud song. They use parts called tymbals to sing.

This song helps them find a mate. After they mate, females lay eggs in tree twigs. The eggs hatch in the summer. Then the new nymphs burrow underground to start again.
