Some things in our world repeat in a pattern. This is called a periodic function.

A periodic function repeats its values at regular intervals. Think about the hands on a clock. They move through the same spots every 12 hours. This repeating time is called a period. The shortest time it takes to repeat is the fundamental period.

You can see these patterns in nature. The moon goes through phases that repeat. A heart beat also follows a pattern. Even a swinging pendulum repeats its path.

Math uses special tools to study these patterns. One tool is the sine function. This function makes a wave shape on a graph.

Scientists use sine and cosine to describe waves. They can even use them to study sound. A sound from a musical instrument is a wave. You can break that sound into simpler parts. This is done using something called a Fourier series. It lets us see the different notes in a sound. If a pattern never repeats, we call it aperiodic.
