Symmetry is a sense of balance.

Asymmetric (PSF)
Asymmetric (PSF)

In math, it means something stays the same after a change. This change is called a transformation. One kind is reflectional symmetry. This is like a mirror image. A line divides the object into two equal parts.

Many animals have this type of symmetry. They have a left and a right side.

Another kind is rotational symmetry. This happens when you spin a shape. The shape looks the same even when it turns.

You can also have scale symmetry. This means a shape does not change when it gets bigger or smaller. Fractals show this kind of pattern.

Symmetry is also in art and buildings.
