Period 1 element

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The periodic table is a map of all chemical elements. It uses rows called periods to show how elements behave. A new row starts when chemical patterns begin to repeat. The first period is the very top row of the table. It is unique because it has only two elements. These two elements are hydrogen and helium.

These elements work in a very specific way. In science, we use quantum mechanics to describe how atoms are built. The first period corresponds to the filling of the 1s orbital. This is the very first shell around the center of an atom. This shell can only hold two electrons at most. This is called the duet rule. Because this shell is so small, the first row only has two spots.

Scientists have studied these elements for a long time. Pierre Janssen was a French astronomer who discovered helium. He found it in 1868 during a solar eclipse. He saw a yellow line in the light from the sun. Later, in 1903, people found large amounts of helium in the United States. This was found in natural gas fields. These discoveries helped us understand what the universe is made of.

Hydrogen and helium are very important to our universe. Hydrogen is the lightest element of all. It makes up about 75% of the mass in the universe. Helium is the second lightest and second most abundant element. Most helium was made during the Big Bang. New helium is made in stars through nuclear fusion. On Earth, helium is rare and comes from the decay of radioactive elements.

We use these elements in many ways every day. Hydrogen is a gas that is very flammable. It is used to make fertilizer and to upgrade fossil fuels. Helium is a noble gas, which means it does not react easily. People use it to fill balloons and airships. It is also used to cool superconducting magnets. It can even change the sound of a human voice.
