Main-group element

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The universe is made of many different building blocks called elements. Some of these are part of a special set called the main-group elements. These elements are very important to our world. They are the most common elements on Earth. You can also find them all over our Solar System. They are even the most common in the whole universe.

Scientists organize these elements on a chart called the periodic table. The main group includes groups 1 and 2. These are known as the s-block. It also includes groups 13 to 18. These are called the p-block. Some people also include group 12 in this set. This group contains zinc, cadmium, and mercury. These metals share traits with both groups.

Different groups have their own ways of acting. The s-block elements usually have one main oxidation state. An oxidation state is a way an element acts during changes. The p-block elements can have more than one. Often, their states are separated by two units. Some scientists also look at group 3. They might even include the lanthanides and actinides. These are the two rows at the bottom of the chart.

History shows us that names for these groups have changed. In older systems, they used different labels. Groups 1 and 2 were called IA and IIA. Groups 13 to 18 were called IIIB to 0. Group 12 was always called group IIB. Group 3 was once called group IIIA. These names help scientists track how elements behave. Even today, people still study these patterns in journals. One such journal is named Main Group Chemistry.

We can see how these elements connect to everything around us. For example, the lightest members are very well known. These include helium, lithium, and beryllium. You might also know boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and fluorine. Some heavy elements like thorium and uranium are also studied. Thorium has only one main oxidation state. Uranium has two states that are two units apart. These facts help us understand the building blocks of nature.
