Perestroika was a major movement to change the Soviet Union. The word means "restructuring" in Russian. It began in the late 1980s to fix a slowing economy. Many people were unhappy with their daily lives back then. The government felt stuck in a period called stagnation. Mikhail Gorbachev led this big effort to save the system. He wanted to make socialism work better for everyone.

Gorbachev used several steps to try to fix things. First, he tried to speed up economic growth. Later, he introduced deeper changes to how businesses worked. He passed the Law on State Enterprise in July 1987. This law let factories decide how much to make. They could sell extra goods to meet consumer demand. He also passed the Law on Cooperatives in May 1988. This let people own private businesses like shops and restaurants.

The history of these reforms started with a speech. Gorbachev first used the term in December 1984. He became the leader and began work three months later. He worked with allies like Alexander Yakovlev to help. Yakovlev was a key thinker for these new ideas. The era of Perestroika lasted from 1985 until 1991. It was a time of huge shifts in power. Many younger party workers actually wanted these changes to happen.

There were many important facts and dates to know. In February 1986, Gorbachev spoke at the 27th Party Congress. In March 1989, a big election changed everything. For the first time, people voted for national leaders. Many voters even crossed off names of famous officials. These elections surprised the people in power. Foreign companies also joined in through joint ventures. The Soviet Union allowed foreign partners to invest money.

These changes connected to many other world events. Perestroika helped bring an end to the Cold War. It changed how different countries talked to each other. Gorbachev promoted "new political thinking" to help with peace. He wanted countries to work together instead of fighting. However, the reforms had many unexpected results too. Some parts of the Soviet Union wanted to break away. This eventually led to the end of the Soviet Union itself.
