Most of these moths live in northern regions. They have a life cycle with four parts. First, they lay eggs. Then, they grow into caterpillars. Next, they become pupae in the soil. Finally, they grow into adult moths.

Caterpillars are very good at hiding. They look like small twigs. They can even change color to match their home. This helps them stay safe from birds. The adult moths also use color to hide. Most moths have white wings with black spots. This is called the typica form.

Some moths are solid black. This is called the carbonaria form.

These colors help the moths survive. Long ago, trees were light in color. The white moths could hide easily. Then, smoke from factories made trees dark. The black moths could hide better on dark bark. This is called industrial melanism. Now, the air is cleaner. The trees are light again. The white moths are common once more.
