The PLA is a very large group of soldiers. They help protect the land of China.
Long ago, this group was much smaller.
Over time, the group grew and changed. They added ships and planes to their work.
Today, they are one of the largest groups in the world. They use new tools to do their jobs.
It is interesting to see how they grew.
The People's Liberation Army, or PLA, is a very large military. It belongs to the Chinese Communist Party. The party has full control over the PLA. Its main job is to protect the party and China.
The PLA has a long history. It began a long time ago in 1927. At first, it was a small group called the Red Army. Many of these early soldiers were farmers.
Today, the PLA is one of the largest forces in the world. It has many different parts. These include the ground force, the navy, and the air force.
The People's Liberation Army, or PLA, is a very large military force. It is the main armed force for the People's Republic of China. However, it is not a traditional military that belongs to the state. Instead, it is the military wing of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The party has absolute control over all the soldiers.
The PLA is made of many different parts that work together. It has four main services: the Ground Force, the Navy, the Air Force, and the Rocket Force. It also has four special arms. These are the Aerospace Force, the Cyberspace Force, the Information Support Force, and the Joint Logistics Support Force. Most military units are divided into five different theatre commands. These commands are based on where they are located in the country. The navy also works closely with the China Coast Guard during maritime disputes. This helps the country manage its waters.
The history of the PLA began many years ago.

In the early years, the PLA was very different.
Today, the PLA is a huge global power.

The People's Liberation Army, or PLA, is the primary armed force of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Unlike many traditional nation-state militaries, the PLA is the military wing of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). It operates under the absolute control of the party rather than the state. The party views the PLA as the guarantor of its survival and rule.
The command structure of the PLA is centralized under the Central Military Commission (CMC). The CMC exercises supreme military command over the armed forces. Since 1989, the General Secretary of the CCP has also served as the CMC Chairman. This dual role gives the leader significant political power as the only member of the Politburo Standing Committee with direct military responsibilities. Interestingly, the Ministry of National Defense does not hold command authority. Instead, it serves as an interface for communicating with foreign entities and the state. This structure helps insulate the PLA from external political influence.
The PLA is organized into several distinct services and specialized arms. It consists of four main services: the Ground Force, the Navy, the Air Force, and the Rocket Force.
The history of the PLA traces back to the Republican era in China. In 1927, leftist units of the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) broke away during an uprising. These groups were known as the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, or simply the Red Army.

Following the establishment of the PRC in 1949, the PLA underwent massive changes. In its early years, the force consisted mostly of peasants. The organization was highly egalitarian, meaning it rejected strict traditional hierarchies. Formal military ranks were not even adopted until 1955. During the 1950s, the PLA began transforming into a modern military with assistance from the Soviet Union. Since its founding, the PLA has implemented nine different "strategic guidelines," which are military strategies. The most significant changes to these guidelines occurred in 1956, 1980, and 1993. The military has also seen significant shifts in leadership, including long-serving regional commanders like Xu Shiyou and Yang Dezhi.
The PLA has participated in several major international conflicts and border disputes. In November 1950, units known as the People's Volunteer Army intervened in the Korean War.

Today, the PLA is recognized as a major global power with massive scale. It is the world's largest military force, excluding paramilitary and reserve forces. China also maintains the second largest defense budget in the world. In 2024, military expenditure reached US$314 billion. This amount accounts for 12 percent of all global defense spending.
