Penny Marshall was a highly influential American actress, film director, and producer. She left a lasting mark on the entertainment industry through her comedic timing and leadership behind the camera. Marshall is most famously recognized for her role as Laverne DeFazio on the sitcom Laverne & Shirley. This television series ran from 1976 to 1983 and focused on two brewery workers. Her performance earned her three Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

Marshall's journey into professional entertainment began in her childhood through dance. Her mother, Marjorie Irene Ward, was a tap dance teacher who ran the Marjorie Marshall Dance School. Penny began her career as a tap dancer at only three years old. She eventually taught tap at her mother's school. Her father, Anthony W. Marshall, was a director of industrial films and later a producer. This environment surrounded her with the mechanics of production from a very young age. Her brother, Garry Marshall, also became a famous television producer.

Before becoming a star, Marshall worked several different jobs to support herself. After leaving the University of New Mexico, where she studied math and psychology, she moved to Los Angeles in 1967. She joined her brother Garry, who was already a successful television icon. Her early television work included a role as Myrna on The Odd Couple. She also appeared in various television movies and guest roles. In 1975, she guest starred on Happy Days in an episode titled "A Date with Fonzie." This appearance introduced the characters Laverne and Shirley to the public. The characters were so popular that they became the stars of their own successful spinoff show.

Transitioning from acting to directing required intense dedication and a steep learning curve. Marshall began directing episodes of Laverne & Shirley to gain experience. She later moved into theatrical feature films, starting with Jumpin' Jack Flash in 1986. She described the process of learning to direct feature films as being as difficult as "cramming four years of college into one semester." To ensure her films were completed on schedule, she worked on set all day and spent her nights planning the next steps of production.

Marshall achieved significant historical milestones as a female director in Hollywood. In 1988, she directed the film Big, starring Tom Hanks. This movie became the first film directed by a woman to gross more than $100 million at the U.S. box office. She repeated this financial success with A League of Their Own in 1992, which also earned over $100 million. Her directorial portfolio includes several other major productions. These include Awakenings in 1990, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. She also directed The Preacher's Wife in 1996 and Renaissance Man in 1994.

Throughout her career, Marshall maintained connections to many different corners of the industry. She was the first official guest star to appear on the animated series The Simpsons, providing the voice for Ms. Botzcowski. She also worked as a producer for films such as Cinderella Man and Bewitched in 2005. Her influence extended to television directing as well, with episodes of United States of Tara and According to Jim. Her ability to navigate different roles—from dancer to actress to director—showed her versatility. She proved that women could successfully manage the massive scale of blockbuster filmmaking.

Marshall's legacy is defined by her ability to break "glass ceilings" in a male-dominated field. By directing high-grossing films and receiving critical recognition, she changed the landscape for women in cinema. Her work helped pave the way for future generations of female directors to lead major studio projects. She was honored with the Women in Film Crystal Award in 1991 and the Women of Vision Award in 2013. Her career remains a significant study in how talent and persistence can reshape an entire industry.
