Penelope "Penny" Eckert is a famous American scientist who studies language. This field is called sociolinguistics. She looks at how people use speech in different groups. She is a professor at Stanford University. She also served as the president of the Linguistic Society of America in 2018.

Her work helps us understand how our identities are built through words. She believes that language is not just about grammar. It is also about how we show who we are to the world.

Eckert uses a special way of studying people called ethnography. This means she spends time with people in their own worlds. She watches how they talk and act in real life. She developed three waves of this work to help her research. The first wave looks at how people talk in big American cities. The second wave looks at how social groups are built. The third wave looks at how people understand these groups in their local areas.

Eckert has spent many years studying how young people change language. She calls adolescents the "movers and shakers" of linguistic change. In the 1980s, she studied high school students in Detroit. She found two main groups called "Jocks" and "Burnouts." Jocks often follow school rules and middle-class values. Burnouts often resist school norms and prepare for blue-collar jobs. Many students actually felt like "In-betweens" instead of picking just one group.

She also studies how people talk in California. She helped create a study called "Voices of California." This study looks at how English sounds different in various parts of the state. She looks at how vowels like "o" and "u" are pronounced. She also studies "uptalk," which is when a voice rises at the end of a sentence. Some people think California speech is just like Hollywood movies. Eckert shows that the state has much more variety than that.

One of her most important ideas is the "community of practice." This is a group of people who share ways of doing things. They might share a language style, values, or even a hobby. For example, a sports team or a group of mechanics can be a community of practice. Eckert shows how these groups use language to build their identity. She also studies how gender works in these groups. She found that speech patterns can show power in different ways depending on the group.
