Later, Davidson Black helped name this group Sinanthropus pekinensis. In 1929, a Chinese scientist named Pei Wenzhong found a nearly complete skullcap.

The discovery of Peking Man began with Johan Gunnar Andersson in 1914. He was originally in China to map mineral deposits for the Swedish government. In 1918, an American teacher named John McGregor Gibb pointed him toward Zhoukoudian. Andersson returned in 1921 with paleontologists Walter W. Granger and Otto Zdansky. Zdansky found the first fossil, a human tooth, in 1921.
