Long ago, the area was a very important trading spot. Merchants from the Minangkabau Highlands used the Siak River to move goods. In the 18th century, the region was a market for these merchants. The area was once called Senapelan. This name came from a type of tree. Later, the city grew into a big residential area. On June 23, 1784, the area was officially named Pekanbaru.
